چکیده

The global aquaculture of penaeid shrimp has grown rapidly during the past two decades. In 1998, world shrimp farmers produced an estimated 737 200 t of whole shrimp (this includes 530 200 t from the eastern hemisphere and 207 000t from the western hemisphere), a record 12% increase from the 660 200 t produced in 1997 (Rosenberry 1998, 1999). The shrimp farming sector suffered a serious setback during 1995-96. Lack of technically qualified manpower, improper site selection, defective farm design, rapid intensification, overcrowding of farms in restricted locations and disproportionate development of the industry relative to supply of quality farm inputs paved the way for poor environmental conditions in ponds. The ultimate effect of the above-mentioned problems was serious disease outbreaks. Two dozen diseases of shrimp occur sporadically in shrimp farms, but none of these have caused serious harm to the industry. However, the recent disease caused by a viral pathogen (white spot viral disease) during 1993–1994 delivered a lethal blow to the global shrimp farming industry, which could not Abstract The white spot viral disease in penaeid shrimp affects the development of the global shrimp industry. This paper reviews the viruses that cause the disease, the transmission of the virus, diagnosis and preventive measures. White Spot Viral Disease in Penaeid Shrimp – A Review

The Penaeid Shrimp Viral Pandemics due to IHHNV, WSSV, TSV and YHV: History in the Americas and Current Status

At least four virus caused pandemics have adversely affected the global penaeid shrimp farming industry since 1980. These viruses in the approximate order of their discovery are Infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), Yellow Head Virus (YHV), Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV), and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). The socioeconomic impact of the diseases caused by these viruses...

Immunomodulatory effects of seagrass Halophila ovalis polysaccharide mixed feed in adult black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon and its protective efficacy against white spot syndrome virus infection

As white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) can be highly pathogenic in penaeid shrimp, various feed supplements have been tested to help to protect farmed shrimp against WSSV disease. Here a polysaccharide extract from Halophila ovalis (HO) seagrass was added to feeds at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 g[a1] /kg to assess its ability to protect Black Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) against WSSV ch...

An infectious viral disease of penaeid shrimp newly found in Korea.

Since 1993, massive mortalities have occurred among the penaeid shrimp Penaeus orientalis cultured in Korea. The major gross findings of the naturally occurring cases were 2 to 6 mm sized white spots on the inside of the carapace and reddish discolorization. Amphophilic to basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were readily observed in the epithelia of epidermis, foregut, gills, and lymphoid ...

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) concentrations in crustacean tissues: a review of data relevant to assess the risk associated with commodity trade.

We have reviewed the available peer reviewed literature on pathogen load for white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in species susceptible to infection. Data on pathogen load in traded commodities are relevant for undertaking import risk assessments for a specific pathogen. Data were available for several of the major penaeid shrimp species farmed for aquaculture and for one crab and crayfish species...
